Maui Iao Valley 10K Race Review 2007

Louis & Asti Tomsic at Iao Valley 10K awards
Louis & Asti Tomsic after the Iao Valley 10k run.

By Louis Tomsic

The Iao Valley 10K was ran on saturday morning at 7A on July 14, 2007. The day was sunny and beautiful for a race that goes 3 miles uphill and finishes 3 miles downhill. It is an out and back course that starts in Wailuku town to the right of the main highway. The course stays off the highway on a town road for a mile. the first mile has a slightly steeper grade than the rest of the course. After a mile, the road curves to the right and goes on the road to Iao Valley. There are no steep up hills but the entire way is a gradual uphill. There is a slight break at 1.5 miles for a slight downhill but that is quickly over. At the top in the Iao valley parking lot you do not go around a cone but instead circle the parking lot in a clockwise direction. Once at the half way point, the rest of the race is a relaxing downhill with the fastest pacing possible on the last mile. The last mile takes you into the parking lot for the final 20 meters to the finish line.

The Valley Isle Road Runners put on this race with excellent post race refreshment including grapes, water mellon, blue berry & bannana muffins with plenty of water and gatoraid. Random prize drawings were given to over half of the about 100 entrants. The awards were a unique medal give to the top 3 in each age division.

I enjoyed the challenging race course. I like to see the other runners on the way back to the finsish. I highly recommend this run. The race director made this race one of the best in Maui.
