Haena to Hanalei 8 mile 2007 Race Review

Kauai's Haena to Hanalei 8 mile race start 7A
By Louis Tomsic
The Haena to Hanalei 8 mile race was ran on Saturday, June
2,
2007 on a perfect sunny day on Kauai. This race is one of 3 road races
that can be run on the Garden Island of Kauai. The Hanalei Canoe Club
puts on this fantastic race which is challenging because of its rolling
uphills and downhills over this beautiful coast. The ocean is visible
for half the race as the course goes over 5 one lane bridges till it
finishes in the park at Hanalei. The Hanalei
Canoe Club have several volunteers on the course that provide water
because it does get humid out. This years race had a 5K and a 1 mile
run along with the 8 mile run. The 8 mile run is a point to point race.
A school bus drives runners to the start line so you need to show up
early so you do not miss the race start if you are running.
The event drew over 200 runners. The size of the race increased this
year because more people were walking the 8 mile course. I believe more
people are participating because of the absolutely wonderful pancake
breakfast that is delived by Skip, Kolu and Marvin as they make as many
pancakes as one can eat. The breakfast also includes many fruits,
coffee, and other drinks as you can handle. This year I had 6 pancakes
because the Hanalei Canoe Club knows how to
make pancakes just right. I love them with butter and syrup. They have
been putting on this race for some time with this years event being the
27th annual event.
I talked to Steve Loceys brother who told me that the event had started
as a 4 person relay he had run several times in the 70's and 80's when
Steve Locey was one of Hawaii's elete runners. He still lives on Kauai
but does not race anymore In the 90's, the Hanalei Canoe Club changed the race to be asingle person 8 mile run. In the 2000's a 5K and 1 mile run have been added.
The Haena to Hanalei 8 mile race tank top is always well made
and proudly shows the over 20 sponsors on the back of the t-shirt that
help put on one of the best races in the state of Hawaii.
Did I say that Skip, Kolu and Marvin make some of the best pancakes in the world?
I will return again to Kauai next year to do this great event.
